Feeling Tired? Check Out These 5 Vitamins for Energy

As a culture, we value busyness. We admire people who get up early, work hard, and go to bed late because they are passionate about their work.

We all know we need to get more sleep and that we feel tired. In fact, a 2015 YouGov study demonstrated that most Americans do not feel rested for most of their week.

You may be one of those people struggling to keep up with all your responsibilities and feeling tired all the time. Of course, you can sleep more each night and take some daily time to relax.

But diet and vitamins for energy can also play a big role in how we feel. What are some of the best supplements for increased energy?

B Vitamins

All of the B Vitamins are important for increasing energy. B12 (cobalamin) is the star of the group, but the other members are:

  • Vitamin B1 (Thiamin)
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
  • Folic Acid (Folate)

These supplements work in sync to take recently-eaten carbohydrates and turn them into fuel. Without adequate amounts, you might experience:

  • anemia
  • memory loss
  • fatigue and weakness
  • digestive problems

Unfortunately, Vitamin B12 deficiency is relatively common. Since it plays such a large role in stabilizing energy levels, not having enough can make you feel tired and weak. Vegetarians and vegans are at the highest risk of deficiency because B12 is found only in animal products.

Other at-risk groups include:

  • individuals who have undergone weight-loss surgery
  • people with celiac or Crohn's disease
  • anyone taking common heartburn medications regularly

Omega-3

Studies have indicated that Omega-3s are excellent sources of everyday energy. They give your body the healthy kind of fat it craves. Burning slowly over a long period of time, this fat gives you stamina without spiking your sugar levels.

Federal guidelines call for 200 IU per day for people below 50. This number increases as you age, although most researchers believe you need at least 1,000 IU/day for Vitamin D to do its job.

Magnesium

Magnesium has often been in the news lately. This mineral is now recognized for its excellent cardiovascular benefits. In fact, a magnesium deficiency may show up as an irregular heartbeat or high blood pressure.

Magnesium also has a vital role to play in promoting energy levels. It animates you when you feel tired. What's more, magnesium is vital in decreasing chronic fatigue symptoms.

Unfortunately, the stressful lives we lead are very bad for our magnesium levels. Stress hormones released when we are anxious actually deplete them.
